WATER ITINERARY
Bergamo AltaWith the participation of Massimiliano Milesi Massimiliano Milesi (tenor sax) and Daniele Richiedei (violin and viola) Who better than Uniacque, the fully public-owned company that has been managing the integrated water service in Bergamo and its province since 2006, can tell the underground story of water - thanks to the valuable and indispensable collaboration of the speleological groups Le Nottole and the Sebynica Association - in a prestigious site like the setting of the Upper City? The “Water Itinerary” develops along a stretch of streets and alleys of about 3 km, entirely within the spectacular 17th-century Venetian Walls: an itinerary - Aquae Ductus Bergomensis - that will take the “visitor by the hand, guiding them through different historical epochs, where the” artistic, architectural, and engineering evolution of the aqueduct complex manifests itself in all its foresight. There are 15 identifying stops on our tour “inside the Walls. The meeting point for the visit and its first stop will be at Colle Aperto. We then move to the upper room of the Porta di Sant”'Alessandro, where you can admire the passage of the Vasi aqueduct. We continue to Piazza Mascheroni, under which one of the large water reserve tanks is hidden, then descend to the Vagine spring and climb back up to Via Arena, along the route of the “Magistral Aqueduct. We then reach the Antescolis fountain, the Visconti fountain, and Piazza Vecchia, to admire the Contarini fountain. From the square, we move to the washhouse in Piazza Angelini, then along Via Gombito to the San Pancrazio fountain, and finally reaching Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, where it's possible to admire another” cistern. The visit could end at the Sant'Eufemia fountain. But this year there will be a novelty! Some of the stops on the Water Itinerary “will be accompanied by musical moments featuring, solo or in duo, saxophonist Massimiliano Milesi and violinist and violist Daniele Richiedei. The proposed music will follow an improvisational itinerary ranging from folkloric echoes to jazz and contemporary music. Massimiliano Milesi and Daniele Richiedei share the” experience of the “experimental ensemble Take Off, directed by composer Mauro Montalbetti. A project that mixes contemporary music with” collective improvisation. The two musicians, drawing on the ideas developed in this laboratory, will interweave their respective sensibilities to give body to a rich and multifaceted dialogue. The roles of their respective instruments will constantly change in search of unusual timbres and mysterious rhythmic-melodic fluctuations. The average travel time - calculated, as is appropriate, at a more “touristic” pace, for those who duly linger on the historical/artistic and architectural beauties - is about 2 and a half hours. SARA CALVANELLI – VIRGINIA SUTERA “Ejadira”
Accademia CarraraSARA CALVANELLI - VIRGINIA SUTERA "Ejadira" Two female musicians and composers are at the center of an improvisation and extemporaneous composition project: a fluctuating interaction between violin, accordion, voices, and live looping that traverses baroque and folk sonorities, meeting contemporary jazz and moving from lyrical moments to full-fledged dances. Sara Calvanelli and Virginia Sutera have individually collaborated with artists of international caliber, with a special focus on the dialogue between music and visual arts and theater. As a duo, they have released their first album - Ejadira - produced by the Norwegian label Losen Records. Their concerts are always different and changing depending on the space that hosts them and the moment: a continuous improvisational flow in which spectators will find themselves immersed from the first instant, a dimension at times meditative and suspended, at times playful and dancing. Ranging from ancient songs to experimentation, from free improvisation to composition for theater, dance, and image, Sara Calvanelli has always sought a personal and feminine dimension to the accordion. She has performed concerts and performances in over ten countries worldwide and numerous collaborations with international artists, without distinction of genre, origin, and language. Also interested in the encounter between music and other arts, Virginia Sutera graduated from the Milan Conservatory with a thesis dedicated to improvisation, deepening the figure of the English composer Cornelius Cardew in the work of The Great Learning. She created the Tuscany Music Revolution project and formed artistic partnerships with, among others, pianists Alberto Braida and Ermanno Novali. TRIO MANISCALCO Special Guest PIETRO TONOLO
DasteTRIO MANISCALCO Special Guest PIETRO TONOLO It is Emanuele Maniscalco himself, a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has been working internationally for some time, who presents his creation: «This trio is an ideal place to dialogue with authors from the past who represent an inexhaustible source of knowledge and inspiration for me. Francesco and Oliver are two excellent young musicians who know the tradition but at the same time possess great open-mindedness. This combination allows me to effortlessly integrate into the repertoire pieces that don't strictly come from jazz, as well as original compositions and freer moments of improvisation». Within the trio's fabric, the tenor sax of Pietro Tonolo, a soloist of great value, authoritatively inserts itself: «Imagining a fourth element with whom to share this process, I never had any doubts that it should be Pietro: his creativity, experience, and intelligence are exemplary for deeply understanding the state of health of jazz today». ENRICO RAVA “Fearless Five” (1st set) / THE COOKERS (2nd set)
Teatro DonizettiENRICO RAVA "Fearless Five" "Fearless Five" is the latest creature of the most international of Italian jazz musicians, former Artistic Director of Bergamo Jazz from 2012 to 2015. It is a group that revolves around, in addition to the charisma of the trumpeter and flugornist who leads it, some of the most talented exponents of the latest generation of Italian jazz musicians. A group that combines young and creative energies, enhanced by a leader who knows how to draw lifeblood from the musicians he plays with, repaying them with his experience, his natural musicality, and leaving them ample room to maneuver. "With this group I feel like on an ideal island, where everyone gives and everyone receives what they need. There is great freedom but mutual respect, everyone is listening to each other, as in a perfect democracy that only jazz can represent," says the same Enrico Rava, "Musicians all have this great ability, almost telepathic, to listen and interact to input. But it also takes courage to be on this island. Surrounded at times by a threatening sea, at times less so, given such difficult times we are living in, it still remains my ideal island where I love to live and play music." To make up the Fearless Five Rava brought in Matteo Paggi on trombone - scouted at Siena Jazz seminars, Francesco Ponticelli on double bass and Evita Polidoro on drums, who together provide a formidable propulsive drive. With them is guitarist Francesco Diodati, already at Rava's side for a decade and the true center of gravity of the new quintet, which has just released its eponymous album, released by Parco della Musica Records. A record that, assembling old and new compositions, gives music of great freshness, the result of the understanding between Rava, who at eighty-five years old has lost none of his poetic vein, and his partners. And the credit must be shared equally among five "fearless" jazz musicians. With six albums behind them, the first of which, Cast the First Stone, recorded in 2010 and the latest Look Out released in 2021, the Cookers, whose lineup has seen some alternation over time, encapsulate the spirit of a music that feeds on the most straightforward modern jazz language, yet keeping well away from mere historical review operations. Trying to summarize such long and important careers, it comes natural to start with the oldest of the bunch,
