Operetta: “In the literal sense a small opera, mostly in one act, of tragic or comic character,” so says the Treccani. And in the definition of “small opera” lies one of the reasons for the fortune of a theatrical genre loved by many.
Operetta now has a long tradition behind it and, indeed, a large following of fans. More than valid reasons to include it permanently in the programming of the Donizetti Theater Foundation, which in 2025 will once again offer the now customary series of three titles, with – to lead the way – Ball at the Savoy, an operetta but also something more. In addition to waltzes, arias and love duets, Ballo al Savoy is, in fact, full of wild rhythms, from Argentine tango to swing, with very clear allusions and references to the musical. In particular, it resoundingly features Cole Porter, whose music composer Paul Abraham inserts a paraphrase of “Night and Day.” Ballo al Savoy will be brought to the stage by the Compagnia Teatro Musica Novecento, led by Maestro Stefano Giaroli, and directed by Alessandro Brachetti.
Austria is one of the cradles of Operetta: Viennese dream. One hundred years of merriment… , the second title on the bill, is a performance that, in drawing on the school of the Austrian capital, but not only, moves between historical reconstruction and pure entertainment through a sequence of sumptuous, fast-paced pictures that serve as a common thread for the revival of famous titles and the discovery of others that are less represented. Puccini also wrote for Vienna, and perhaps not everyone knows that! Viennese Dream will arrive at Teatro Donizetti with an idea and direction by Corrado Abbati, staged by the company of the same name and with the valuable presence of the Balletto di Parma and a live orchestra.
Finally, Scugnizza, full of typically Neapolitan lyricism. Its story, at times moving and at times comic, is absolutely verisimilar and reflects the canons of the “Italian-style” operetta, with those traits of regionality that distinguish our operetta production. Scugnizza will be brought to the stage by the Compagnia d’Operette Elena D’Angelo, which-after last year’s success-returns to the stage of the Donizetti Theater for the second time.
COVID-19 STOPS SUBSCRIPTION THEATER SEASON
As a result of the continuing health emergency caused by the spread of Covid-19, which currently calls for the closure of performance venues to the public, and the uncertainty of when the theaters may reopen, the Donizetti Theater Foundation is forced to reschedule its 2020/2021 Theater Season programs and consequently cancel the related season ticket campaign.
With subscriptions for the 2020/2021 Season suspended, the subscription campaign will resume in the following Season, 2021/2022, keeping the subscriptions from the last Season staged valid.
The Foundation is already working to think about new programming that will not include season tickets, but only the sale of individual tickets for each of the dates on the calendar, will be presented as soon as the situation allows for planning in serenity and in full compliance with current health protocols.
