Visiting information
The house where Gaetano Donizetti was born is a 5-story building dating back to medieval times. The Donizettis lived in the basement. Purchased by the City of Bergamo in 1925, in 1926 the building was declared a National Monument because it was “of historical interest.” On the occasion of the first centenary of Donizetti’s death (1948), and then in 1973, the basement was restored and opened to the public. In 2007, restoration work was initiated by the City of Bergamo, which led to its full opening in 2009 and management entrustment to the Donizetti Theater Foundation.
During the tour, access is provided to the building’s various rooms of historical interest in such a way as to restore an overview of the life of the Bergamasque composer with hints of the events related to his master Mayr and the theater.
