Bergamo has two historic theaters. The first dates back to the 18th century, built along the city’s central promenade and now dedicated to Gaetano Donizetti, the great composer to whom Bergamo was born.
The other, built in the 19th century, also along a historic central street but in this case in the Upper City, is called Teatro Sociale in memory of the society of noblemen who wanted it erected.
The Upper City also preserves Gaetano Donizetti’s Birthplace, a place of historical and cultural interest.

DONIZETTI THEATRE

The Donizetti Theater is a true home of culture, a dynamic place experienced as a public, prestigious and familiar space. A temple of multi-disciplinarity, quality and cultural and artistic excellence, a place of aggregation, liveable all year round by the city in different spaces.

TEATRO SOCIALE

The Teatro della Società, this was its original name, opened in 1809. Built thanks to the activity of Bergamasque nobles, the Teatro Sociale was active until the 1920s. Since 1974 it hosted mainly art exhibitions and expositions, until the definition and beginning of the restoration work undertaken through a joint initiative of the City Council and the Superintendent’s Office starting in 2006.

DONIZETTI STUDIO

Donizetti Studio is a space that was created next to the Donizetti Theater, between the walls of the historic city theater and the fountain dedicated to the famous Bergamasque composer. It wants to be a place open to citizenship, an eye outside the theater for encounter, observation, discovery and experimentation, a space where the public can encounter theater in a new way, through workshop paths, exhibitions and events, and where everyone can bring something of themselves.

BIRTHPLACE OF GAETANO DONIZETTI

The Birth House where Gaetano Donizetti was born in 1797 is a place of historical and cultural value. The oldest part dates back to the 14th – 15th centuries and has maintained its original appearance: an ideal backdrop for imagining daily customs and behaviors of the past. Since 2009, after an intervention that made it fully accessible, Casa Natale, managed by the Donizetti Theater Foundation, has been open to the public.
