Lighting and phonics courses

For the third consecutive year, the courses of the Donizetti Theater Foundation for the training of lighting technicians and sound engineers will take place at the Donizetti Theater.

The objective of the courses is to offer the opportunity to have a first direct, theoretical, but above all practical contact with the profession of the theater technician, providing a series of basic preliminary elements and tools, preparatory to an initial approach to the world of performing arts.

The courses are taught by the technical staff of the Donizetti Theater Foundation – Alessandro Andreoli, chief electrician and light designer, and Cristian Tasca, sound engineer – with the support of Giulia Breno and Umberto D’Annolfo from the Set Design Office. Project curated by Maria Grazia Panigada.

“Ours is a theater that follows a line that combines technologically advanced equipment and methodologies with what is the tradition of the Donizetti Theater itself, which maintains an Italian-style stagecraft conception where manual skill plays a very important role,” says Sergio De Giorgi, Head of the Stage Staging Office, “Today in many theaters there is a tendency to make use of the most sophisticated technology, while we continue to refer to tradition, strong in the historical nature of a 19th-century theater that has preserved its functionality. We therefore carry on a discourse of preservation of historical memory, because in our opinion there is no awareness of the present without a historical knowledge of the theatrical journey, even from a technical point of view.”

“These courses, together with the acting and dramaturgy courses, represent a fundamental part of our activity, going to integrate with all the performance proposals at Teatro Donizetti and Teatro Sociale,” specifies Maria Grazia Panigada, Artistic Director of the Prose Season and Other Paths of the Donizetti Theater Foundation, “They constitute the educational part and are important for us because we feel it is our duty to give young people the opportunity to learn about the professions of theater and to be able to approach this world and then perhaps in the future be able to be part of it. Personally, I am grateful to all those who make this project possible by putting their professionalism on the line and showing educational concern.”

2025 Call: Selections Are Now Open!

Once again this year, building on the positive feedback from past years, the Donizetti Theater Foundation is issuing a call for applications to participate in the lighting and sound engineering courses related to the Prose Season and Altri Percorsi, conducted by the Foundation’s own expert staff.

The courses are aimed at young people aged 17 or older (even if not yet reached, as long as it’s by the end of 2025).
To participate, candidates must submit their curriculum vitae containing any previous experiences and studies, as well as a motivation letter, by filling out the form at this link no later than 12 PM on Wednesday, April 30.
Following the selection based on the submitted documents and letters, the results of the application process will be announced on Wednesday, May 7.
The courses will begin on Tuesday, June 3.

Both courses, at the end of which a certificate of attendance will be issued, will provide theoretical elements of the basic criteria, methodology, and terminology, followed by practical tests with the chief electrician and chief sound engineer of the Donizetti Theater. There will be a common introductory meeting for both courses; afterwards, each course will take place over four intensive days where the theoretical and practical foundations of the disciplines will be laid.
Participants in the lighting technology course will also have the opportunity to have a direct experience at the Claypaky company, an international reference brand in the professional lighting systems sector: the day includes a visit to the company’s museum and production area and a technical session.
The students of the sound engineering course will instead visit the recording studio 1901 Factory in Alzano Lombardo, a creative space dedicated to music and performing arts and a meeting place for artists and professionals. Both courses will conclude with the experience of recording a live band on the stage of the Donizetti Theater.
